Winning at the Raging Bull Awards

09 February 2017 Jonathan Faurie

Behind a house, the ability to earn an income – both pre-retirement and during retirement – is a major decision that one undertakes.

Placing trust in an investment company to look after your future income is no small feat; it therefore makes sense that clients will look for validation that asset managers are worth the fees that they are asking.

The Raging Bull awards aims to achieve this, rewarding hard work within the industry and providing the public with an indication on who the industry’s top companies are.

Top of the pile

Old Mutual was recognised for its top performing Global Equity Fund at the 2017 Awards.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Old Mutual Global Equity Fund was awarded top performance by a Domestic Collective Investment Scheme for the three-year period ending 31 December 2016 in the category Best (South African Domiciled) Global Equity General Fund.

The Fund also took home the award for the best performance on the basis of risk-adjusted returns by a Domestic Collective Investment Scheme for the five-year period ended 31 December 2016 in the category (South African Domiciled) Global Equity General.

Denominated in Rands, the Global Equity Fund provides South African investors exposure to investment best practice ideas across global equity markets, and seeks to offer investors diversified exposure to quality assets across the globe. “With exposure to top quality international brands including Apple, Amazon, Pfizer, Verizon, Intel and Microsoft, the Fund is suited to those wanting to build their own solutions or add additional offshore exposure to their portfolios,” says Elize Botha, Managing Director of Old Mutual Unit Trusts.

Diversified achievement

Sanlam also performed well at the Awards. The winner of the Best South African Interest-bearing Short-term Fund was the Enhanced Yield Fund, the winner of the Best South African Equity Mid- and Small-cap Fund was the SIM Small Cap Fund and the winner of the Best Offshore Far East Equity General Fund was the SIIP India Opportunities Fund.

Melville du Plessis, who manages the SIM Enhanced Yield Fund, says that the track record of the Fund demonstrates its ability to outperform during increasing and decreasing interest rate cycles as well as in favourable and unfavourable credit market environments.

Its benchmark is the STeFI + 0.5%, but since its launch in May 2011 the SIM Enhanced Yield Fund has beaten the STeFI by 1.36% p.a., which is an unusually large outperformance for a fixed interest fund, limited to cash, government, corporate and inflation-linked bonds.

Boutiques also rewarded

The Raging Bull Awards are not exclusively for large investment companies. There has been an increased focus on boutique asset management companies with a few of them proving that they can run with the big boys.

Boutique equity and balanced fund managers Centaur Asset Management performed well at the Awards three awards in the face of stiff competition from larger companies in the market.

Their Awards included a Raging Bull Award for top performance by a Domestic Collective Investment Scheme on a Risk-adjusted Basis, for the five year period to end December 2016, in the category Best South African Multi-Asset Flexible Fund, for their Centaur BCI Flexible Fund.

They also received Raging Bull Awards for their Centaur BCI Flexible and Balanced Funds, for top performance by a Domestic Collective Investment Scheme, for the three year period to the end of December 2016, in the sub-categories South African Multi-Asset Flexible and South African Multi-Asset High Equity, respectively.

Measuring trust

While these awards are a good indication regarding which companies are the industry’s best performers, it is worthwhile noting that people measure trust in different ways.

This is why the diversified nature of the Raging Bull Awards becomes appealing. It gives a balanced indication when it comes to industry performance, and provides a variety of insight that appeals to the largest possible target market.

Editor’s Thoughts:
Measuring trust is also a dynamic exercise. It will be interesting to see what the future of the Awards holds and who gets recognised in the future. Please comment below, interact with us on Twitter at @fanews_online or email me your thoughts jonathan@fanews.co.za.
