Santam scoops honours in Climate Change Leadership Awards

17 April 2012 Santam

Santam’s research project in the Eden District Municipality to study the impacts of climate- change related risks and the ability of insurance to adapt has been declared the winner of the Climate Change Leadership Awards (CCLA) in the financial services s

The CCLA are the first awards in Africa to recognise, reward, motivate and celebrate South African businesses, communities, youth, schools and individuals that are taking the lead through positive voluntary action by implementing a range of activities to combat global warming.

The Santam study has showed that the proactive management and restoration of these ecological systems has the potential to offset most of the future increases in risk related to climatic changes. Santam’s project demonstrated that there are risk drivers which can already be influenced to reduce the risk and improve climate-resilience of communities.

Ray-ann Sedres, Head of Sustainability at Santam, says Santam continues to strive to work towards aligning its business to environmental sustainability. “In order to achieve this, collaboration through partnerships both internally and externally is critical.”

CCLA says in a statement that significantly greater response to the threats of climate change resulted in the toughest year yet for judges. This year the scope of categories was expanded and judging methodologies evolved to sustain the spirit of the awards and cater to growing interest across the board.

The ten category winners were announced at a carbon neutral event in Sandton on Thursday, 29 March 2012.
