At the 14th Annual FISA Conference sponsored by Hollard Court Bonds, held at the Sandton Convention Centre on 11 September, the annual FISA Chairperson’s Award was handed to Mr Arnold Shapiro, in recognition of his significant and major contribution to the fiduciary profession.
Mr Shapiro completed B.Proc and LL.B degrees at Wits University and was admitted as an attorney in 1979. He became a partner of Routledges Inc trading under various names including Eversheds and Hogan Lovells South Africa in 2004. He currently practises as a Consultant at Lawtons Africa.
He has lectured since 1981 to the law students in preparation for the law board admission examination on Wills & Deceased Estates, initially at the Jenny Weinstein Law School and subsequently for the Law Society of South Africa (LEAD) at Wits, UJ, Unisa and the full-time Law Schools in Johannesburg and Pretoria. He also lectured at the Law Schools at Eversheds, Deneys Reitz and Edward Nathan on Wills & the Administration of Deceased Estates.
Mr Shapiro co-edited the lecture notes used nationally at the LEAD Law Schools in training law students in preparation for their law board examination. He also updated these lecture notes over various years. Mr Shapiro acted as an examination marker for the law board entrance examinations on Wills & Estates and served as a moderator for the Law Board examination for a number of years. He has also been a member of the governing body of the Johannesburg School for Legal Practice.
Mr Shapiro has also been a regular guest on radio and TV over the years.
He is a highly committed member of FISA since inception and served as a member of the Disciplinary Committee for a number of years.

The award is given annually to the person who, in the estimation of the FISA Chairperson and the FISA Council, has made a remarkable and significant contribution to the fiduciary profession. Nominations are called for in the months leading up to the FISA Conference. No sitting FISA Councilor or any employee of or contractor to FISA is eligible.
