Fairtree’s Equity Prescient Unit Trust Fund received the Alexander Forbes Asterisk Award for Best Equity House at the FPI Annual Awards Dinner, held in Johannesburg at the Inanda Polo Club last night.
The award-winning fund co-managed by Stephen Brown and Cor Booysen returned 153.46%, or 14.77% per annum, over the period November 2011 to July 2018.
“Due to the externalised nature of the South African equity market, we believe that both top down and bottom up analysis are required to make sound investment decisions,” said Brown.
Booysen said that their well-diversified portfolio underpins out performance in most macro and political environments.
“We believe that we must have the willingness and the ability to change our portfolio when the environment changes, adapting quickly to changing economic and political conditions that affect the earnings outlook of companies,” said Booysen.
“We believe in being flexible and we regularly review and adjust our exposure to different market sectors for the prevailing market conditions. We believe it will allow us to provide clients with consistent investment performance in most market conditions,” Brown added.
“While most other industry awards focus on past performance, the Asterick Awards assesses how asset managers skilfully manage their portfolios to withstand challenges and deliver on investor expectations. The criteria is the investment skills of the manager in seeking out opportunities presented by the market,” said Gyongyi King, Chief Investment Officer at Alexander Forbes.
