Fairheads wins a BASA award for CSI project

03 September 2010 Fairheads

Fairheads has won a prestigious Business & Arts SA (BASA) award. At a high-profile ceremony in Johannesburg on Monday night 30 August we were ranked first in the category of Youth Development for the Fairheads UCT Clanwilliam Arts Project. CEO Richard Krepelka and Head of Drama at UCT, Mark Fleishman, accepted the award which is a mounted assembly of four artworks commissioned by BASA from emerging artists.

The Clanwilliam project is in its tenth year and has transformed the lives of young children in the rural town of Clanwilliam north-west of Cape Town. Each year about 600 children are involved in a creative workshop around an ancient San story chosen from an important historical archive. Through lantern and mask making, dance and theatre they re-enact the story with a modern-day message. In this way, children from a poor community are exposed to the creative arts and the San heritage kept intact for future generations. Through its support, Fairheads aims to aid in development of the youth and education.

The project takes place again in a few weeks' time, on 12 September.
