Cadiz absolute yield and inflation plus funds – 2011 FM Morningstar fund awards’ winners

14 March 2011 Cadiz

Bronwyn Blood and Francois van Wyk, portfolio managers of the Cadiz Absolute Yield and Inflation Plus Funds respectively, were thrilled to accept 2011 Fund Awards in the Cautious Allocation and Flexible Allocation categories at the Morningstar and Financial Mail awards ceremony.

The Cadiz Absolute Yield Fund, a flexible fixed interest fund, aims to provide investors with a return of inflation plus 3% over rolling three years and a positive return over any rolling twelve month period. It is the top performing Cautious Allocation fund with a return of 11.24% per annum for the three years ended 31 December 2010 (source: Morningstar). Importantly it also outperformed its rolling three year CPI+3% benchmark return of 9.75% per annum. Similarly, the Cadiz Inflation Plus Fund, an actively managed multi-asset fund which aims to outperform inflation by 5% over rolling three years, while also targeting capital preservation over rolling twelve months, was the top performing Flexible Allocation fund with a return on 11.72% per annum for the three years ended 31 December 2010 (source: Morningstar) (CPI+5% = 11.65% per annum).

Commenting on the outperformance of the Cadiz Absolute Yield Fund, portfolio manager Bronwyn Blood said; ‘The fund has delivered solid, consistent performance over the longer term, as demonstrated by our receiving this award for the 2nd year in a row. The fund is expected to deliver, and has delivered more consistent returns than a traditional income fund, and to reduce the volatility normally inherent in the bond market. As a result the fund is ideally suited to conservative investors with a medium to longer term view, and particularly those who do not want to make the complex asset allocation decision between the growing (in number and complexity) range of fixed interest instruments. In fact, the ability to make use of the myriad of available investment opportunities to diversify risk and to enhance the yield of a portfolio has proven extremely attractive and beneficial to investors.’

Commenting on the outlook of the Cadiz Inflation Plus Fund, portfolio manager and chief investment officer Francois van Wyk said; ‘While our view is that global growth is on track thanks largely to the massive coordinated policy response and that riskier asset classes are still heading higher due to this excess liquidity and greater macro-economic certainty, it is evident that inflation and interest rates have bottomed and that the timing of rate hikes is being brought forward. We believe that in this economic environment a multi-asset investment approach is likely to yield the best possible return outcome. At Cadiz we have a well defined multi-asset investment process and proven track record as demonstrated by the Cadiz Inflation Plus Fund receiving this award’.
