Leading South African law firm Webber Wentzel has appointed Candice Pillay as a partner in its Projects - Finance Environment and Development Practice.

Pillay specialises in environmental law, administrative law, procurement law and litigation. She joins Webber Wentzel from another South African law firm where she was a director in the Environmental and Life Sciences Practice.

She has extensive experience providing legal and strategic advice on litigation and legislative compliance in day-to-day business operations to clients in diverse industries.

Her expertise extends to international environmental instruments such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, and several roadmaps and agreements arising out of them.

Some of her noteworthy achievements include successfully setting aside unlawful legislation promulgated by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and providing input on draft legislation pertaining to areas of health, environment and energy.

Pillay has a B.Com, an LLB, and a Certificate in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development Law from the University of Witwatersrand.

Webber Wentzel appoints new Director in Tax Practice

Leading South African law firm Webber Wentzel has appointed Dan Foster as director in its Tax Practice. He will be based in the Johannesburg office.

Foster specialises in corporate international tax, expatriate tax and African tax and has extensive multi-jurisdictional and cross-border experience covering share schemes, exchange control and remuneration structuring for large multinational corporations. Foster will also be advising high net wealth individuals on their off-shore trust tax matters.

Foster joins Webber Wentzel from KPMG Services (Pty) Ltd where he served as associate director with the Tax and Legal Services team, providing expatriate tax and employees' tax consulting and compliance services to clients such as Barclays, Bank of America and MTN since 2007.

Prior to that, Foster had spent 10 years in the UK, the last three with KPMG (UK) LLP's tax team in London. During this time he managed the expatriate tax compliance programme for major international clients where he provided insight into international assignment policy and practice issues like share schemes, pension funds and benefits.

Career highlights include managing the human resources and tax advisory sub-project for BP's Innovene joint venture with Nova Chemicals. He also served as assistant manager to the largest Saudi petrochemical conglomerate coordinating tax, immigration and payroll compliance for employees representing 15 countries.

Australian-born Foster has an M.Comm (Tax) from the University of the Witwatersrand, a certificate in Advanced Trust Law from the University of Pretoria and a B.Bus (Accounting) from RMIT University, Melbourne. Foster is a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA Australia) and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). He is also in the process of completing his post-graduate Diploma in International Tax at the University of Johannesburg.
