Value based asset manager RE:CM appoints Jan van Niekerk as CEO

Cape Town based Global asset manager Regarding Capital Management (RE:CM) has appointed Jan van Niekerk as CEO of the firm. Van Niekerk’s appointment coincides with RE:CM’s 10th anniversary.

Van Niekerk was previously Group CEO of Peregrine Holdings Ltd, and he also served as Executive Chairman of wealth management company Citadel, which was RE:CM’s very first institutional client 10 years ago. In welcoming van Niekerk, RE:CM founder Piet Viljoen said: “Jan has firsthand experience as a client of our business since literally day one. This, in addition to his extensive experience within financial services, gives him a thorough understanding of our business from all perspectives.”

Van Niekerk comes on board not only as CEO but also as a significant shareholder in the business and investor in funds managed by the firm.

With Van Niekerk taking over the responsibility for the strategic management of the firm, Viljoen’s role as Chairman will become non-executive. This will free him up to focus his attention entirely on his passion - investment research. As founder, shareholder and large investor in the funds managed by the firm, Viljoen will now play an even more valuable role within the entire investment process. The investment team will continue to be managed by RE:CM Investment Director, Daniel Malan.

Viljoen stressed that while the past decade has been one of the most volatile in financial markets history, RE:CM’s value based investment philosophy and approach has enabled it to grow clients’ wealth in real terms significantly above inflation, while simultaneously protecting their capital against large, permanent losses. “Under Jan’s leadership, RE:CM will continue to implement the same investment philosophy and process.”

Van Niekerk said: “I am delighted at the opportunity of joining RE:CM. The value based investment philosophy, applied in global markets, is one that I have applied for most of my life and is one with which my view of the world resonates easily. I have always respected the ethos and ethics with which RE:CM conducts its business, especially the way in which they always put their clients’ interest first. I look forward to being part of the team in building out RE:CM as a leading global asset manager.”
