Santam CE, Steffen Gilbert has been elected as President of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO) the umbrella body representing all insurance operators on the African continent.
Gilbert, who has transformed Africas largest short-term insurer, Santam, into an innovative industry leader since taking over the helm three years ago, succeeds Ghanas Nana Ageyei-Duku as AIO President.
He was elected this week during the joint AIO/Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) conference held in Cape Town from May 14 to 17.
The conference, themed, Corporate leadership in insurance: The African model in the global arena, is being attended by some 980 delegates from around the world.
The AIOs members include insurers, re-insurers, brokers and intermediaries, insurance institutions and trade associations, as well as supervisory authorities from around the continent. It currently has approximately 350 members from 47 African countries.
The organisations primary aim is to promote inter-African cooperation and to develop a healthy insurance and reinsurance industry in Africa through the establishment of specialised associations and technical committees.
Gilbert plans to use his tenure as AIO President to further advance cooperation throughout Africa and to address the challenges arising from globalisation across the continent.
