Having a truly top class individual at the helm of our investment team will strengthen our offering to clients measurably and will allow us to build on our innovative product offering and strengthen our performance.

This is an important appointment and is part of our strategy of building SPI into the leading private client asset manager and stockbroker in South Africa. As director of investments, Alwyn will take full responsibility for the investment process at SPI and the performance of the model portfolios. Alwyn will work very closely with our team of portfolio managers to ensure client performance in line with their risk appetite.

As a voting member of the Asset Allocation team he was actively involved with the management of funds worth R35 billion and also consulted on the Life side of the group which involved funds worth R200 billion.

"I am delighted to join the SPI team and look forward to utilising my experience with institutional investments to bring direct benefits to SPIs client base. It is a challenge which I am looking forward to embracing," added Van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe has a BCom, an Honours degree in Economics and a MBA from the University of Stellenbosch.
