Sanlam Private Investments bolsters team with industry veteran

13 April 2007 Sanlam Private Investments

Sanlam Private Investments (SPI) today announced the appointment of Alwyn van der Merwe as Director of Investments, effective May 2, 2007.

Van der Merwe, who will sit on SPIs executive committee and Board, is well known in the financial services industry, in particular for his successes as a fund manager for various leading unit trust funds.

Danil Kriel, CEO of SPI, which manages investments for private clients, said that Van der Merwes excellent track record and stellar reputation in the industry would be a valuable addition. Having a truly top class individual at the helm of our investment team will strengthen our offering to clients measurably and will allow us to build on our innovative product offering and strengthen our performance.

This is an important appointment and is part of our strategy of building SPI into the leading private client asset manager and stockbroker in South Africa. As director of investments, Alwyn will take full responsibility for the investment process at SPI and the performance of the model portfolios. Alwyn will work very closely with our team of portfolio managers to ensure client performance in line with their risk appetite.

Van der Merwe is a veteran of the financial services industry with more than 15 years of experience, beginning at Old Mutual Investments.  He subsequently moved to Old Mutual Asset Management where he was involved in a wide range of investment activities. He was part of the team that launched the Old Mutual Equity Fund in Namibia and also ran the Old Mutual Shareholders Fund and the Old Mutual Balanced Fund, both of which are unit trust funds. On the pension fund side, he was responsible for the management of third-party balanced funds. As a voting member of the Asset Allocation team he was actively involved with the management of funds worth R35 billion and also consulted on the Life side of the group which involved funds worth R200 billion.

"I am delighted to join the SPI team and look forward to utilising my experience with institutional investments to bring direct benefits to SPIs client base. It is a challenge which I am looking forward to embracing," added Van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe has a BCom, an Honours degree in Economics and a MBA from the University of Stellenbosch.
