Hannes Brand

Sanlam Private Investments (SPI) – the private client portfolio management and stock broking arm of the Sanlam Group – has strengthened its investment team by recruiting a number of high profile industry professionals. André Vos and Hannes Brand are among the talented individuals who will add value, depth and diversity to SPI’s teams in Cape Town while Peter Duminy, Danie Wolmarans and Mary Molfessis will add their expertise to SPI’s Pretoria operations.

Daniël Kriel, CEO of SPI said, “We are incredibly pleased to announce these new appointments and we are excited about our ability to attract top industry talent into the team. The expanded team represents a good blend of leadership capabilities, investment experience and market savvy.”

André Vos has been appointed branch manager for SPI’s Cape Town branch and also joins the SPI executive committee. Vos, who might be better known by some for his captaincy of the Springbok team and sterling performances on the rugby field, is also an extremely competent businessman. He holds a B.Com in accounting and joined Hichens Harrison, SPI’s UK stock broking partner, in London in 2007 after his professional rugby career ended. He returned to SA in 2008 as director and head of Institutional Sales desk at Religare Hichens Harrison’s South African operations.

Developing the in-house pool of talent within the Sanlam Investments cluster of businesses has yielded positive results previously, so Kriel is particularly excited about the appointment of Hannes Brand. “He is one of the most experienced investment professionals in the Sanlam group and has spent the last 31years with Sanlam Investment Management (SIM), where he was responsible for the portfolios of a number of leading institutional clients.”

SPI’s impending acquisition of Cornerstone Fund Managers from Peter Duminy and BDO in July 2009, will see Duminy appointed as the branch manager for the Pretoria branch of SPI and as a member of the SPI executive committee. He holds a B.Com (Hons) in Economics and began his career at the Receiver of Revenue, later moving to the Ministry of Finance. Prior to starting Cornerstone Fund Managers with BDO in 1998 he worked as a private client portfolio manager at Merrill Lynch. Following his appointment, some colleagues at Cornerstone will also join SPI. They are Danie Wolmarans and Mary Molfessis.
