Sanlam appoints new directors
Sanlam is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Philisiwe Buthelezi, Mr Philip de Villiers Rademeyer and Mr Christiaan Gerhardus Swanepoel as independent non-executive directors to the Boards of Sanlam Limited (Sanlam) and Sanlam Life Insurance Limited (Sanlam Life) with effect from 28 March 2011.
Ms Buthelezi, currently the Chief Executive Officer of the National Empowerment Fund (NEF), has extensive knowledge of banking, capital markets and international investment. Her experience encompasses both private and public sector activities. Prior to joining the NEF, Ms Buthelezi worked for a French investment bank in London, held responsibility for Risk Management Control at the South African Reserve Bank and worked in the Treasury division of Standard Corporate and Merchant Bank.
She was employed by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in France and Germany to promote European investment in South Africa. In 2002 she returned to South Africa to become the Chief Director of the Black Economic Empowerment Unit of the DTI. Ms Buthelezi is the Chairman of Group Five Limited and also serves on the board of Mvelaphanda Resources Limited. She holds an MBA (Corporate Finance) and completed an MSc (Economics: thesis not defended).
Mr Rademeyer joined Sanlam in 1998 as the Financial Director. He served on several Sanlam Business Boards and Board committees in a non-executive capacity after he retired from Sanlam on 31 October 2006. He served as the Chairman of the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut (AHI) during 2007. He started his corporate career with the Gencor Group in 1971 and left in 1993 when he was financial director. Mr Rademeyer holds a CTA (1971) from Unisa and CA (SA) (1972). He also attended the Stanford Executive Programme (1984).
Mr Swanepoel joined Sanlam in 1972. He held various positions at Sanlam, including Senior Pensions Actuary (1980-1982), Assistant General Manager: Group Benefits (1982-1985) and Assistant General Manager: Actuarial (1985-1989). He became Chief Actuary on 1 January 1990 and remained in that position until he retired in 2005. He continued as a non-executive director on the Board of Sanlam Life until June 2006. He has also served on several Sanlam Business Boards and Board committees as non-executive director since 2006. Mr Swanepoel holds a BSc. Hons (1982) from Unisa. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (having qualified in 1975) and a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa.
