Astute, the company that provides data integration services to the South African financial services industry, has announced the appointment of Prem Govender as chairperson with effect from 1 January 2013.
Ms Govender has served as a non-executive director of Astute since June 2010 and succeeded Peter Dempsey, Deputy CEO of ASISA, who remains an Astute board member.
Ms Govender is a professional accountant and continues to run the accounting and financial planning practice started by her late father in 1962. She is also the chairperson of the Financial Planning Institute (FPI), having served the organisation as a director since 2004. Ms Govender has just completed a three-year term on the board of the Financial Planning Standards Board - the international standards-setting body for financial planners around the globe, and owners of the CFP® mark.
Ms Govender has served on various advisory committees of the Financial Services Board (FSB) and is a member of the FAIS Advisory Committee. She was appointed as Trustee of the FSB’s Financial Services Consumer Education Foundation in October 2011, and is currently the chair of the South African Savings Institute, an organisation dedicated to encouraging a culture of savings.
A Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), Ms Govender holds BCom (Accounting) and MCom (Taxation) degrees, and an advanced post graduate diploma in financial planning.
Biddie Biddulph, Managing Director of Astute, commented: “Prem brings a wealth of expertise to the Astute board at a time when the financial services industry faces a host of interesting challenges. We are fortunate to have someone of her calibre as our chairperson. We also extend our thanks to Peter for his significant contribution and wise counsel as our past chairperson. We’re delighted that he remains available to serve on the Astute board.”
