– The Centre for Professional Development, a subsidiary of the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI), has announced the appointment of Adv. Wessel Oosthuizen, CFP®, as General Manager for the Centre. He will officially assume his new role at the FPI from 1 January 2014.

Adv. Oosthuizen currently serves as the Director of the Centre for Financial Planning Law at the University of the Free State Law Faculty. In addition to his service at the University, he also served on the Certification Committee of Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), to develop, maintain and review international competency, ethics and practice standards for the global financial planning profession.

In making this appointment, Godfrey Nti, CEO of FPI, said: " Adv. Oosthuizen's extensive experience over the last 20 years; developing financial planners; serving FPSB in setting global standards for the financial planning profession; and serving FPI in various volunteer capacities; makes him the best qualified person to head the FPI Centre for Professional Development.

In the very competitive sector that is the financial services industry today, we take pride in the fact that financial planners and advisors who hold the coveted CFP® designation, and indeed, any other FPI designation, have the distinctive edge of being among the most competent, professional and trusted in our industry. With the appointment of Wessel to champion the Centre's mission of excellence in on-going professional development, we hope to strengthen this distinctive edge of our members even further in the market place.”

As General Manager of the FPI's Centre for Professional Development, Adv. Oosthuizen will primarily be responsible for the professional development of members, something he describes as "an ideal opportunity to play a bigger role in the financial planning sphere.”

"Over the past 12 years I have been involved with FPI in various capacities. When I was presented with the opportunity to assist FPI with the professional development of members, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to expand my role in continuing to develop our profession. The direct involvement with FPI renders me the opportunity to add real value as we seek to extend access to financial planning services to the broader South African public,” commented Oosthuizen.

Logie Govender, CFP®, FPI Board Member and Chairperson of the FPI Centre for Professional Development, said: "We are pleased and have great faith in Adv. Oosthuizen; we believe he will continue to build on the work that has already been done to promote learning and development within FPI.”

The Centre was developed to provide top end value CPD events, with the overall mission of planning and delivering continuous professional development that adds value and enhances the knowledge and skills of FPI members and the broader financial planning and advisory community.
