Liberty Holdings Limited is pleased to announce the appointment of Ivan Mzimela to the group’s executive management team, where he will assume accountability for Human Resources, Corporate Social Investment, Stakeholder Management, Transformation, Customer Relations, Brand and Communication. Mzimela joins Liberty from Hollard, where he was most recently Executive Chairman of Hollard Risk Capital. He brings extensive industry experience in strategy and HR and has wide stakeholder relationships across corporate, government, commercial and industry networks. Ivan also formed an integral part of the team that drafted the Financial Sector Charter. In addition to his 6 years with Hollard, Mzimela has held executive and senior positions at Nedbank and Eskom.

Mukesh Mittal, currently Executive: Risk and Strategic Management for the group, will assume additional responsibility for Ian van Schoor’s growth portfolio and will serve as Chief Executive: Growth, Strategy and Risk. Mittal’s portfolio will encompass Health, Africa, Bancassurance, Frank.net, Group Strategy, Risk, Statutory Actuary and Legal. Mittal, who joined Liberty in February this year, brings extensive international industry and actuarial experience to this important portfolio. In 1991 he joined PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and was subsequently made a Director in PwC’s Actuarial and Insurance Management Solutions division before moving to Allianz AG in Munich as the Deputy Chief Actuary. He then joined Old Mutual plc (London) in 2006 as the Group Chief Actuary, during which time he served as a member of the Board of Old Mutual South Africa. In 2008 he took on a new role in Hong Kong leading Strategy and Business Development, throughout the Asia Pacific region. In 2010 he joined Lloyds Banking Group as the Director of Insurance Risk. Mittal also served on the Board for Actuarial Standards in the UK until he came to South Africa.

Ian van Schoor, the current CE of the Growth Cluster who joined Liberty through the acquisition of STANLIB has for some time now expressed an interest in pursuing new opportunities. Ian will remain with Liberty to oversee the handover of Growth responsibilities to Mukesh Mittal in August and has also agreed to remain involved with the execution of some Group strategic build initiatives due for launch later in the year.

Says Bruce Hemphill, CEO of Liberty Holdings, “I would like to thank Ian for his commitment and hard work over many years and wish him every success in his new endeavours. Ian was integral in the establishment of STANLIB and has played a major role in Liberty over the past 5 years.”

Hemphill continues, “Mukesh brings significant international industry and actuarial experience to this important portfolio while Ivan’s stakeholder networks, extensive Human Resources, leadership and strategic experience will provide significant benefit to Liberty’s wealth management growth objectives.”
