Filming of The Insurance Apprentice 2018 officially kicked off on 7 January at the FNB Conference and Learning Centre.

Bringing in a whole new fresh approach with twists and turns, the audience is bound to find delight in the interesting surprises set in store.

Meet them all

Going about the usual business and setting the scene for the fourth instalment of The Insurance Apprentice 2018, the first episode, sponsored by Aon South Africa, introduces us to the 2018 apprentices:

  1. Blessed Nxuseka, Executive Associate – CEO & COO, Discovery Insure;
  2. Gobusamang Motaung, Financial Lines Underwriter, AIG South Africa;
  3. Joseph Mngenela, Operations Manager, InsuranceSupermarket Insurance Brokers;
  4. Karl Oftebro, Broker: Sports & Leisure Department, Bay Union Insurance Brokers;
  5. Kutlwano Kgoebane, New Business Consultant-Personal Lines, Aon South Africa;
  6. Noxolo Dlamini, Marketer, Mirabilis Engineering Underwriting Managers;
  7. Samantha Baleson, Legal Risk Advisor: Professional Risks, Aon South Africa;
  8. Venette Rust, Representative, RSAM Short Term Insurance Brokers.

The surprise task

Having watched previous seasons, the apprentices perceived this to be a day of ease where introductions would be made, and the week’s dealings would be outlined leaving room for some rest to end the day… or so they thought.

This however, is not how things went down. The apprentices were requested to head to the first boardroom session of The Insurance Apprentice 2018 where their first task of the series was given by judge Simon Colman, Executive Head: Digital Distribution at SHA Specialist Underwriters - aka Judge Dread, Vuyo Lee, Chief Marketing Officer at Old Mutual Emerging Markets (OMEM) and guest judge Terence Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Aon South Africa.

Task one #negotiationskills

The task, focusing on negotiation skills, challenged the candidates with the following scenario: They are brokers dealing with a renewal. The judges are the clients and they must sell an increase in fees/commission. They also had to convince the client to buy at least one new cover.

Ideally the claims activity under one section (say the motor or goods in transit) should provide enough ammunition to justify a fee increase. Selling a new cover however, was set to be tricky.

With the ultimate decision maker in the hands of the broker, the difficulty was in selling new cover that was not currently covered. Did the brokers ultimately convince the client and provide a compelling argument as to why the fees should be increased?

But wait… there is more! The winner of this task would walk away with a R10 000 cash prize, sponsored by FAnews.

So, who could that winner have been? Watch episode one to find out who took this one.

We would like to thank Aon South Africa for sponsoring the first episode of The Insurance Apprentice 2018, FNB Insurance Brokers for being our hosts for the week and Masifunde Training Centre for spoiling our apprentices with awesome goody bags in their rooms.
