Smart Skills, Real Jobs

18 May 2026 | Non-life | The Insurance Apprentice | Rianet Whitehead

With only 9 contestants remaining, the competition is getting fierce. In this exciting challenge, sponsored by INSETA, the contestants must inspire South Africa’s youth to pursue careers in the insurance industry, focusing on scarce and emerging skills.

As INSETA celebrates 25 years of excellence in skills development, the challenge aims to future-proof the industry by making insurance an appealing, stable, and growth-driven career option for young people.

Setting the scene
After impressing the judges in previous episodes, the top 9 contestants are now split into two teams. Each team will partner with a 19-year-old collaborator - their exact target audience - who will actively shape ideas and co-present the final product. This twist ensures the solutions are authentic, fresh, and directly relevant to South Africa's youth.

The challenge
Teams must convince young South Africans (aged 18-25) that a career in insurance offers more than job security - it’s a space for growth, development, and real impact. Each team will:

• Identify one scarce skill and one future-focused role in insurance.
• Create a compelling story highlighting career prospects, personal growth, and skills development.
• Co-present the story with their 19-year-old teammate in a creative 3-minute video.

Traditional presentations are off-limits. Contestants must use role play, props, and dramatisation to craft a message that stands out in today’s youth-driven digital world.

Who’s judging?
Our esteemed panel of judges for this episode includes:
• Gugu Mkhize (INSETA)
• Nox Dlamini (Co-Judge)
• Simon Colman (The Liability Company)

What’s at stake?
The competition is fierce, as only some contestants will move on to the next episode. This task will test the contestants’ ability to connect with youth, tell compelling stories, and drive meaningful change in how young people perceive insurance careers.

As the top 9 contestants battle it out, they’ll have to balance creativity, clarity, and strategy to deliver a message that could change the future of the insurance industry. Will they manage to inspire a new generation of talent?
