Eight Days of Anarchy: Can Tech Prevent the Next Crisis?

08 August 2025 | Non-life | The Insurance Apprentice | Myra Knoesen

With just eight contestants remaining, this week’s episode heats up as they confront one of South Africa’s most pressing realities: social unrest.

8 days of anarchy

In July 2021, South Africa experienced one of its worst instances of civil unrest in recent history, leading to an estimated R32bn in Sasria claims within just eight days.

This period of intense social unrest, now referred to as the “8 Days of Anarchy”, saw widespread damage to businesses, infrastructure, and property, particularly across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

An expert panel’s post-event report revealed critical failures within some of the four defence layers in Sasria’s risk management framework.

Episode 4 task summary

In this week’s challenge, sponsored by Sasria, the remaining contestants must tackle the critical breakdowns exposed during the 2021 unrest by designing a comprehensive, technology-driven risk management solution. Their task is to enhance Sasria’s ability to anticipate, prevent, and respond to future instances of social unrest through an integrated platform that supports early-warning systems, real-time communication, intelligence sharing, and stakeholder collaboration.

The solution must address all four layers of Sasria’s defence framework, each playing a vital role in mitigating risk. Teams will be evaluated on how effectively their proposals reduce potential damages, while also demonstrating innovation, practicality, scalability, and alignment with South Africa’s socio-political realities.

Judging this high-stakes round are head judge Simon Colman (CEO of The Liability Company), co-judge Nox Dlamini, and sponsor judge Muzi Dladla (Executive Manager of Stakeholder Management at Sasria SOC Ltd). They'll be looking for ideas that push boundaries - and could make a real-world difference.

The contestants will need to bring innovative, out-of-the-box thinking to the table, leveraging technology, community collaboration, and cross-agency cooperation to offer Sasria a practical and effective solution. Who will rise to the challenge and secure their spot in the next round?
