Protect yourself on the roads this holiday season

With the Easter weekend approaching, millions of South Africans will soon hit the roads on the way to their travel destinations. According to statistics published by the Road Traffic Management Corporation, 70 fatal accidents were recorded, with 105 fatalities during the Easter period of 2010.

According to Wilhelm von La Chevallerie, Actuarial and Risk Services Director at CIB, increased traffic invariably leads to a higher number of road accidents, and it is crucial that people ensure they are adequately prepared for any potential risks before they set off.

He says that in addition to being aware of other vehicles on the road, drivers should also pay particular attention to pedestrians during this time, as research shows that a fair proportion of road fatalities occur amongst pedestrians.

Von La Chevallerie has these useful tips for those planning to be on the roads this Easter season:

  • Ensure that all motor vehicle insurance premiums are up to date and that you have relevant cover in place, especially if you are travelling beyond the borders of South Africa;
  • Make sure that you have your insurer’s emergency centre contact details at hand. Save the number on your cell phone or keep the number in an accessible place;
  • Give your vehicle a quick “health check” before departing. The vehicle’s brakes, tyres (including the tread and the pressure), steering, wheel alignment and all lights will need to be checked and tested;
  • When travelling long distances, ensure that you are well rested. Take regular breaks and always keep a safe following distance.

Von La Chevallerie says that if all drivers take the necessary precautions and are adequately prepared for their journey, the roads will be a safer place for all.
