Farmers assured of getting more under one umbrella
Santam has strengthened its position in the agricultural insurance market by merging its existing operations with those of Agri Risk Specialists (ARS) to form a single business unit that will focus on asset as well as crop insurance. Santam and ARS have an existing successful relationship Santam is the 100% shareholder in ARS and underwriter of its products since 2001.
"This makes Santam the undisputed leader in the agricultural insurance market, with about 30% of the asset insurance market and more than 70% of the crop insurance market," says Edward Gibbens, Santam's Executive Head of Broker Distribution.
"Santam has almost 90 years' experience in agricultural insurance and, together with the expertise of ARS in the crop insurance sector; we can now offer farmers and intermediaries comprehensive risk management solutions.
"Research has shown that farmers' risk management requirements are constantly evolving, which is why Santam reviewed its strategy regarding agriculture in order to align it with market trends. We believe that there are good business opportunities in the agricultural market and definitely wish to confirm and expand on our involvement in this sector," says Gibbens.
"We assure our business partners that the existing relationship between us will not be affected by the merger in any way. Santam will continue to provide innovative products supported by superior client service."
To support Santam's existing relationships, establish future partnerships and take advantage of opportunities, Hannes du Plessis has been appointed to the position of marketing manager of the new business unit. Santam is also in the process of appointing a head for this business unit.
Du Plessis will join the senior management team on 1 October this year and will be responsible for marketing, communication and relationship management.
"Hannes is a well-known figure in the agricultural short-term insurance industry; over the years that he has gained his solid expertise and experience he has also established many relationships. His appointment underscores Santam's determination to entrench and expand its leadership position in the market," says Gibbens.
