No more relying on Doctor Google

"The original diagnosis of illnesses can be wrong up to 18% of the time", according to a Harvard medical study, and "doctors performing Medical Second Opinions enhanced the original treatment plan up to 90% of the time". Being one of the 18% and having a completely incorrect diagnosis would be pretty devastating if it was a serious illness.

That's why, in a first for the South African market, FMI have partnered with Mediguide to bring the Medical Second Opinion service to all new FMI Individual policyholders (Disability, Critical Illness and Life cover). This service provides an independent review of your diagnosis and treatment plan from a choice of more than 107 leading medical centres around the world, including institutions like the Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins Hospital.

There were 2 key insights that led us to adding the unique Medical Second Opinion benefit to all FMI Individual policies;

When we were building our solution for Critical Illness cover, many of the individuals we spoke to emphasised the amount of time they spent researching their condition. This was in search of peace of mind - knowing that they'd been given an accurate diagnosis and the best possible treatment plan out there.

The second key insight was that many people don't seek a specialist second opinion due to the cost implications, or, because they don't want to appear distrusting of their doctor. However, our findings show that MSO doesn't only give you peace of mind about your diagnosis and treatment plan, but gives your doctor the clarity that he/she is looking for too.

There are just 6 easy steps

If you're an FMI policyholder, and have just been diagosed with a medical condition, you'd contact FMI straight away.

We'll put you in touch with Mediguide's local service centre who will initiate the Medical Second Opinion service.

You will need to consent to the release of your medical records before your doctor can prepare them for Mediguide.

Mediguide will then recommend 3 medical centres with expertise in your condition.

Then, you and your doctor will then choose which centre you wish to use from the list of 3 provided.

Within 10 business days of receiving the medical records, you and your doctor will receive a written review of the original diagnosis and proposed treatment plan from your selected medical centre.
