Eurozone contagion fears flare as Greek crisis enters crucial phase

The announcement over the weekend by Greece’s left wing Syriza-led government took most people by surprise: A referendum allowing the public to vote on proposals put forward by the country’s creditors effectively brought an end to negotiations between Greece and representatives of its creditors, the European Commission, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In our eyes, the Greek government’s approach has created additional animosity that probably was unnecessary. But what is more significant, to us, is that the ballot scheduled to take place this Sunday presents little chance of bringing the situation to a conclusion.

I think we are at a critical juncture in global markets today. Investors have been on a sort of high for the past few years, where bonds and stocks alike were defying gravity. I think now is the time to reevaluate one’s fixed income portfolio and think very differently about how it’s going to perform going forward, and how it’s going to perform relative to other asset classes. In our strategies, we’ve tried to design something that’s different, that’s diversified, and that doesn’t track traditional asset classes. In our assessment, the global macroeconomic backdrop looks broadly positive right now, but not all markets look the same—or face the same challenges.
