Morning report (23.2)

22 February 2004 | Investments | General | Angelo Coppola

Local equities closed lower on Friday, as often happens, when positions were closed before the weekend, reports Nico Kelder, economist at the Efficient Group.

Not even a weaker rand could stem the fall in equities prices. The rand weakened against the dollar but strengthened against the euro and pound. European and US markets closed lower while the Far East is mixed this morning.

The Nikkei is up almost 1.5-percent while the Hang Seng is trading almost 1-percent lower. We expect the market to remain flat today in anticipation of a large number of economic data releases later this week.
