Morning report (20.4)

18 April 2004 | Investments | General | Angelo Coppola

Local equities followed the international trend and traded lower yesterday, not even a slightly weaker currency could help, says Nico Kelder, economist at the Efficient Group.

The rand weakened against the majors. The bond market remained flat ahead of the MPC meeting this week. Gold and oil traded slightly lower while platinum shot up to record levels.

European and US markets were mixed yesterday with only the Nasdaq recording a significant increase.

In the Far East the Nikkei is trading substantially higher this morning gaining close to 2-percent so far while the Hang Seng is little changed.

We expect the bond market to remain flat while the equities should follow international markets.
