The strong rand weighed down on the JSE yesterday (21.5), with the all share index ending near the day's lows.

A poor performance on Wall Street on Wednesday added to negativity in early trade, and even with the Dow Jones in positive territory in late South African trade, the market failed to pick up.

At the close, the all share and all share industrial indices had shed 0,85% and 0,67%.

Resources retreated 1,67% the gild mining index tumbled 2,72% and the platinum mining index slid 2,29%. Financials were flat (-0,01%), but the banks index was the star performer on the day, ending 1,14% in the black.

Gold and platinum stocks were lower, even though precious metals prices were holding their own.
