Satrix INDI retains first place for 1 to 5 years
The Satrix INDI 25 ETF, which tracks the FTSE/JSE Industrial 25 index, maintains its record, established over recent months, of being the best performing index tracking fund for periods ranging from 1 year to 5 years. For the 5 year period to end June 2010, the Satrix INDI attained a total return of 17,28% per year, comfortably better than the next two best tracker funds, Stanlib Indi Fund (unit trust) at 15,51% per year and Satrix 40 (ETF), at 15,12% per annum.
The FTSE/JSE Industrial index comprises a number of South African mega companies, SAB, MTN, Naspers, Richemont, as well as market favourites Remgro, Shoprite, Bidvest, Vodacom, etc. By excluding financial and resource companies, the industrial index reduces risk and volatility, but as shown in the performance figures, does not impair total returns.
In the short term (3-6 months) property index tracking funds such as Proptrax ETF and the Prudential Enhanced Property Fund (unit trust) are comfortably the best performers, indicating that the investment cycle currently appears to be favouring the property sector.
In the enhanced tracker fund category, where a manager seeks to outperform the benchmark indices, the Satrix DIVI remains the best performer for the past 12 months (32,66%), followed by the eRAFITM Industrial ETF (29,66%).
