Monthly ETF / Index tracking unit trust performance survey
3 – 5 Year Returns
The etfSA Performance Survey, for the period ended 29 October 2010, shows the Satrix INDI 25 ETF maintaining its place as the top performing index tracking fund over the past 5 years by some margin. The Satrix INDI provided a total return (capital appreciation plus reinvestment of dividends) of 18,71% per annum over the five year period, well ahead of the next best funds, Stanlib Index Unit Trust Fund (15,78%) p.a. and Satrix 40 ETF (15,44% p.a.).
In the three year survey, Satrix DIVI ETF, which tracks a FTSE/JSE index that selects the prospective top 30 dividend paying companies amongst JSE larger cap companies, was well ahead of the other tracker funds. The Satrix DIVI gave a total return of 11,91% per annum for the three years, making it the top performing all equity fund in the SA Collective Investment Scheme industry.
Otherwise, property index tracking funds have come into their own over the 3 year measurement. The Prudential Enhanced Property Fund, a unit trust, provided 10,03% per annum total returns, closely followed by the Proptrax ETF fund on 9,70% per annum.
1 Year or Less Returns
Property tracking funds continue to show superior performance on the one year measurement period, with the Prudential Enhanced Property Fund (29,41%), Proptrax ETF (28,82%) doing somewhat better than the Satrix INDI ETF (24,32%) and the Satrix DIVI ETF (23,93%). Clearly property shares are on the JSE have been amongst the major beneficiaries of the lower interest rate strategy of the SA Reserve Bank and could benefit further from any additional interest rate cuts in the current cycle.
