etfSA.co.za Monthly South African ETF, ETN AND Index Tracking Product Performance Survey

06 March 2012 | Investments | ETF's (Exchange Traded Funds) | Mike Brown, Managing Director, etfSA.co.za

Short-Term Performance (1 month to 1 year) Gold backed Exchange Traded Products, such as NewGold ETF and the Standard Bank Gold Linker ETN, hold the top places in the 1 year total return table, but more recent performance by gold and other commodities ha

The Satrix INDI 25 ETF and Satrix FINI 15 ETF have had very good recent performance, indicating that the JSE has focused attention on the industrial and financial sectors over the past year. The market leading performance by shares which pay above average dividends is captured in the Satrix DIVI Plus ETF. In the short term time frame, 1 to 3 months, Emerging Market and Africa Funds such as DBX Tracker Emerging Market ETN and Africa Top 50 ETN, together with the Standard Bank Africa Equity ETN have moved to the fore of the performance returns.

Medium to Long-Term Performance (2 to 5 years)

With the recovery on the JSE accelerating from early 2009, the 3 year performance of many local index funds has been particularly good over this period. The Satrix INDI 25 ETF, Satrix DIVI Plus ETF and Satrix RAFI 40 ETF have all returned in excess of 30% per annum over the last three years.

Both internationally and locally it appears that: stockmarket recovery begins with the large cap stocks, which are always covered by the main market indices; and the first 10% to 15% recovery on the market is often not recorded by active fund managers, who wait for confirmation of market recovery before committing themselves. It can take some time for the active manager to catch-up with the early mover market performance, which is automatically captured by index funds.

The etfSA Performance Survey measures the total return (Net Asset Value (NAV to NAV)) changes including reinvestment of dividends) for index tracking unit trusts and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) available to the retail public in South Africa. The performance tables (attached) measure the 1 month to 5 years total return compared with the benchmark index returns (including reinvestment of dividends). Note, as the FTSE/JSE calculates the index without taking into account any brokerage or other transaction costs, index tracking products will typically underperform the index because of their transaction and other running costs. .
