1 Year Returns
The top performing index tracking Collective Investment Scheme (return is measured by capital growth plus dividends reinvested) was the Prudential Enhanced Property Tracker Fund, which is a unit trust. It declared a total return of 30,04% for the year ended 30 December 2010. It was very closely followed by Proptrax (an ETF which tracks the FTSE/JSE SAPY Property index of listed property shares on the JSE), which gave a total return of 29,38%.
The Satrix DIVI ETF, which tracks the FTSE/JSE Dividend Plus index, which comprises 30 medium to large companies on the JSE likely to pay the best dividends for the following year, gave a 29,34% total return for the calendar year 2011.
The shorter-term 3 month returns, reflected the recovery in global commodity prices, with the Satrix RESI 20 ETF, providing a 17,96% total return for the three months ended December 2010. The eRAFI Resources ETF (15,40%) and the NewFund Shari’ah Top 40 ETF (15,23%), which has an 80% allocation to resource shares, also performed well over the short term.
3 - 5 Year Returns
The etfSA Performance Survey for December 2010 shows the Satrix INDI 25 ETF still holding its long standing place as a top performing product in the index tracking products available to retail investors through ETF and Unit Trust providers. It provided a total return of 17,70% per annum for the 5 year period ended December 2010.
However, for the first time in over a year, it was pipped for the top performing tracker fund by the Prudential Enhanced Property Fund, which gave a fractionally better 17,76% total return per annum over the past five years.
In the three year performance survey, the Satrix DIVI ETF, with a total return of 16,31% per annum over this period, remains the clear leader.
