Formation of a new association for independent advisors

26 November 2010 | | The National Association of Independent Financial Advisors (NAIFA)

On 24 November 2010, a new association to further the interests of independent financial advisors was formed by a group of concerned independents in Johannesburg. The National Association of Independent Financial Advisors (NAIFA) as it will be known, is a section 21 company with an initial subscriber base of well known stalwarts such as Mark Galbraith, Norman Isaacs, Tracey Davenport, Abdul Carrim and Malcolm Warner, Chris van der Walt, Mike Beder, Len Goldman and Greg Meaden  – all of whom have seen the industry change over the past 25 years or so. They jointly expressed a concern over the shape that the industry is being forced into now by amongst other things, regulation and poor publicity, which seems to be squeezing independent financial advisors out of the industry and marginalising consumers in the process. The consensus view was also that existing representative bodies seemed unable to effectively make the voice of the independent adviser heard.

The NAIFA would focus initially on gaining members based on the values enshrined in its articles of association – valuing and protecting individual rights and positioning IFA’s as valuable members of the financial services community and especially for the clients that they serve. The association will commence to establish regional infrastructure in a manner designed to let every individual voice be heard and spokespersons will be embarking on a road show to speak to and sign up new members from early in the new year. Interested advisers can contact Chris van der Walt (chris@isssa.co.za or 0861 comply) or Mark Galbraith (markg@galbraith.co.za or 011792 0020)”

This is a great innitiative by financial advisors for financial advisors who are neither white nor black, only South Africans free and united against oppression. I am vehemently oppose to the needless exams and would like to bring into play my network of friends and colleagues to end the oppression by the FSB and those that are in cahoots with them. If we do not stand up for our rights now, we will eventually be at the mercy of our regulatory masters. [LET US LEARN FROM THE MAN WHO SAID DURING HITLER’S REGIME : “They first came for the Jew and I said nothing; then they came for the Communist and I said nothing; then they came for the gypsy and I said nothing; THEN THEY CAME FOR ME ; AND THERE WAS NO ONE TO SAY ANYTHING”]. Now is the time to stand up and be counted. Please send all info of NAIFA.

I am in full support of the establishment of a body such as the NAIFA, that really speaks out as one voice on behalf of all IFA's. It has been a long time coming and frustration has truly hit a peak with the new goal post being presented in the form of the RE's. IFA's are tired of always receiving the short end of the stick and moving forward with a voice and body in their corner is a step in the right direction. We look forward to growing the NAIFA with a positive future outlook.

I think that if you are concerned as too whether one party can make a differnce then clearly you underestimate Mark Galbraith's commitment to the industry and to his fellow colleagues. Stand up against the rising tide and dont allow yourself to be consumed by your inability to act on your own beliefs but rather set back and belittle those who attempt to make even the smallest of efforts.

I fully agree that a stronger FIA is better than another association. One big body will have better negotiating powers than a number of small ones. We must stick together for the survival of the independant intermediary.

Why did you not joined the exsisting FIA ? They are an established organisation which are serving the broker community for many years. We should not have different organisations, but only one big one.Only then would we have the necessary power and teeth to take on the FSB and other institutions. EENHEID MAAK MAG. Regards,

Is there really place for ANOTHER broker association? Wasn't the FIA born from the combination of the VMR/LUASA/etc? However, I do agree that a seperate association should be formed to look after the interests of brokers that do only SHORTTERM insurance - the current spectrum under which presentatives are categorised is to wide. A broker that do only SHORTTERM insurance need not be affluent in income tax/longterm insurance/investments/etc.
