Sizwe Medical Fund and regulator assure beneficiaries and providers

20 February 2013 | Healthcare | Medical Schemes | CMS & Sizwe

Sizwe Medical Fund was placed under provisional curatorship in September 2012. The curatorship was confirmed in January 2013.

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has stressed in its press releases that Sizwe was placed under provisional and then final curatorship only because of governance concerns and, as stated many times by Dr Monwabisi Gantsho, Chief Executive of the CMS and Registrar of Medical Schemes: “The curatorship of Sizwe has nothing to do with the long-term solvency and sustainability of the fund. I am confident that at the end of the curatorship Sizwe will emerge even stronger with its members better protected than ever before.” Sizwe continues to honour all its financial obligations, including claims settlement.

“Unfortunately some people have the perception that curatorship has financial implications but this is definitely not the case as Sizwe remains a financially sound scheme that continues to honour all its obligations to members. The role of a curator is to provide the necessary leadership and guidance from a governance point of view to ensure the long-term stability of a scheme,” said the curator, Dr Ngubekhaya Gobinca.

Since being placed under provisional curatorship in September 2012, Sizwe has undergone a transformation that has ensured clear governance and financial structures are in place.
