Despite the recent announcement by the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) that Covid-19 vaccines will be included as a prescribed minimum benefit (PMB), the procurement and distribution of vaccines do not fall within the ambit of medical schemes.

The Investigation Panel responsible for a Section 59 investigation into allegations of race profiling by private medical schemes has opened itself to criticism for its handling of the Interim Report launch. The panel made the full 300-page report available to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) and the Investigation Steering Committee on 15 January 2021 without first sharing the document with the medical schemes implicated in the report. On 19 January, the panel convened a media conference to announce the report findings and simultaneously published the report on its website.

An innovation from one of South Africa’s largest medical scheme administrators will revolutionise how the country’s uninsured gain access to primary healthcare services. Discovery Health is launching a prepaid health platform, accessible to all, with the objective of improved access to affordable, quality healthcare. The solution is aimed at the uninsured segment of the domestic market and will initially be offered in major metropolitan districts in eight of nine provinces. “There are a large number of formally employed who do not have access to any type of medical insurance; they either cannot afford it, or their employers do not offer it,” said Dr Ryan Noach, CEO of Discovery Health, during a pre-launch interview with FAnews.
