Outcome of Court Ruling on Sizwe Medical Fund Curatorship

On Tuesday, 22 January 2013 the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria reached a judgment on the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) application to confirm the curatorship for Sizwe Medical Fund. The court has upheld the initial judgment and therefore Dr Ngub

"It is important to emphasise that Sizwe is under curatorship only because of its previous governance concerns and that this has nothing to do with the long-term solvency and sustainability of the Fund," says Gobinca.

Since starting at the Fund in September 2012, Dr Gobinca and his team have managed to implement clear governance and financial structures to protect the interests of the beneficiaries of the scheme and to prevent a negative impact on the Fund.

"We have begun to strengthen our internal capacity for monitoring scheme performance and providing oversight to suppliers. Major steps have been taken to improve the Fund’s competitiveness through innovation and service excellence," says Gobinca.

"The improved fundamentals we have implemented will support our ambition to grow the scheme in a self sustaining and responsible way for the benefit of all members. The next objective is to improve and strengthen stakeholder engagement at every level, including members, employer groups, brokers and service providers.

"Sizwe continues to fulfil its obligations to its members without any difficulty and remains one of the largest and healthiest funds in South Africa, thus being able to care for the health of the nation," he concludes.
