Momentum Health Solutions Announces 2025 Product Enhancements and Annual Contribution Increase for Momentum Medical Scheme and Momentum Health4Me
Momentum Health Solutions is excited to unveil Momentum Medical Scheme’s latest product updates, along with complementary product enhancements for 2025.
As part of its ongoing commitment to providing accessible and comprehensive healthcare solutions, these enhancements are designed to meet the evolving needs of South Africans, while maintaining affordability.
There is more positivity around the South African economy, however unemployment still remains high, and consumers are having to make difficult financial choices. The medical scheme industry is not immune to this trend. Consumers are taking their financial constraints into account when evaluating their medical scheme choices based on the cover they can afford, rather than the cover they actually need, leaving them at risk going forward.
Medical inflation has increased above CPI once again, which during the COVID-19 years was suppressed below CPI. This, coupled with the increase in the utilisation of healthcare services, has resulted in increased claims costs. The industry is not growing, and the profile of the market is aging. However, given all these challenges, the sector has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability.
Momentum Medical Scheme will introduce benefit enhancements aimed at improving the overall healthcare experience for its members in 2025. “These enhancements reflect our dedication to offering innovative and sustainable healthcare solutions that cater to the diverse needs of the South African market. By focusing on choice and value without having to buy down to save money, as well as preventive care, mental health support, and chronic disease management, we aim to provide a holistic approach to health and wellness,” says Damian McHugh, Chief Marketing Officer, Momentum Health Solutions.
The enhancements will include an updated low-income option, easier and more accessible rewards, the ability to use these rewards to pay medical scheme contributions, and an easy digital process that demonstrates how much consumers can save monthly without having to buy down. This ensures Momentum Medical Scheme’s members have access to the best possible care and can buy better value. By investing in these areas, the Scheme helps its members lead healthier, more fulfilling lives, underscoring its commitment to their overall well-being.
In addition to these benefit enhancements, Momentum Medical Scheme will implement an annual contribution adjustment of 9.4% to ensure the continued financial stability and sustainability of its offerings. None of its members will experience a double digit increase and there are no benefit reductions - for the 10th year in a row. The increase is expected to be one of the lower increases the industry and, in so doing, the trend of Momentum Medical Scheme having the lowest average increase amongst the large medical schemes over the past decade will continue.
This reflects the Scheme’s commitment to balancing affordability with the need to provide high-quality healthcare cover. “The Scheme’s approach to contribution adjustments is guided by a thorough analysis of healthcare cost trends, member utilisation patterns, and economic factors. By taking a data-driven approach, Momentum Medical Scheme made informed decisions that benefit both members and the Scheme,” explains McHugh.
When considering a medical aid option for the upcoming year, it is crucial to understand how these adjustments impact choices. Prioritising value over cost is essential; cheaper plans often come with limited benefits and higher out-of-pocket expenses. Investing in a comprehensive plan that meets healthcare needs ensures the best care and support. By understanding the full range of benefits, members can make informed decisions that maximise their health outcomes and financial well-being.
Throughout 2024, medical schemes have focused on enhancing member engagement and improving service delivery. Digital health solutions, telemedicine, and wellness programmes have become more prevalent, offering members convenient and cost-effective ways to manage their health. These innovations have improved access to care, controlled costs and enhanced health outcomes.
Momentum Health4Me, Momentum Health Solutions’ health insurance product, has seen significant growth in membership, with an increase of more than 5% over the last six months, reaching a total of more than 220 000 beneficiaries. Designed to provide affordable healthcare solutions to individuals and families who may not have access to traditional medical aid, Health4Me has expanded its reach and impact to become one of the largest healthcare insurance providers in the market. “Health4Me has been instrumental in bridging the gap in healthcare access, offering essential health benefits at an affordable price. The product’s growth reflects our commitment to inclusivity and our understanding of the diverse needs of the South African population,” says McHugh.
Multiply has provided significant value to its members this year by moving from a traditional loyalty programme to incentivising healthy behaviour. This approach rewards members for knowing and improving their physical and mental health. Healthy members can begin earning maximum rewards from day one, eliminating the need for points, waiting periods, more policies, or income requirements to access full benefits. Momentum Health Solutions emphasis on equity ensures that all members, regardless of their background, have equal opportunities to know their health, improve their health and get rewarded, thereby promoting better health outcomes and mitigating the long-term cost burden of disease.
“In 2025, Momentum Multiply will continue to promote healthier lifestyles among members, reinforcing the belief that your health is your wealth. We understand that good health is the foundation of a fulfilling life, and the most important asset one can have. Momentum Multiply will introduce new features and enhancements to further motivate and support members in their health journeys.” says McHugh.
As part of these enhancements, Momentum Multiply will now offer the digital health and fitness assessment to all its members, as knowing your health is the first step to improving your health. Wysa, an emotional intelligent chatbot, is another feature that Momentum Multiply introduced for members to support mental wellness. Wysa is an AI-powered companion that engages employees in conversations about their feelings and challenges. It provides support through evidence-based techniques and strategies and access to a variety of self-help resources, including mood trackers, journaling prompts, and guided exercises focused on cognitive behaviour therapy, mindfulness, and emotional regulation. Wysa is private, easy to use, and available 24/7.
By leveraging data and personalised insights, Momentum Multiply will continue to offer tailored recommendations and rewards that align with individual health goals, making it easier for members to stay on track and achieve their wellness objectives,” explains McHugh. Members will be able to use those rewards to pay their months medical scheme contributions, thereby leveraging their health to maintain the cover they need.
Momentum Health Solutions remains committed to leading the way in providing innovative, affordable healthcare solutions that meets the needs of all South Africans, ultimately unlocking more health. In 2025, the business anticipates continued growth in the adoption of digital health technologies and a greater emphasis on personalised care. By focusing on preventive care, leveraging advanced technologies, and providing comprehensive support, a more sustainable healthcare ecosystem can be established that supports the well-being of all South Africans. This commitment ensures that everyone can thrive in a robust and dynamic healthcare environment, encouraging them to take charge and invest in their health, and prioritise it as their greatest asset.
As the sector evolves, Momentum Health Solutions remains dedicated to fostering a healthier, more resilient South Africa, where every citizen has access to the care and support needed to thrive. “The journey towards a healthier nation is ongoing, and Momentum Health Solutions is proud to lead the way, ensuring that the future of healthcare in South Africa is both sustainable and inclusive,” concludes McHugh.
