A bold move to protect members’ pockets and health in tough times

CompCare Medical Scheme is taking a bold stance in the South African healthcare market with its 2026 annual increases, blending measured cost management with solid benefit expansion while opening the door for young people.

“In a climate marked by escalating healthcare costs and with consumer inflation reaching a 10-month high of 3.5% at the end of July 2025 (source), many schemes face tough choices between premium hikes and benefit cuts. Against this backdrop, CompCare is charting a cautious but confident course that safeguards members’ access to quality care without compromising cover,” commented Josua Joubert, Chief Executive and Principal Officer of CompCare Medical Scheme during the scheme’s 2026 product launch.

“CompCare’s focus goes well beyond managing costs to preserving lasting value for members. Our priority is to ensure that members are not left paying out of pocket because their benefits have been cut back. Our carefully set average weighted increase of 9.49% reflects this balance across our range of product options – a cautiously moderate approach that ensures financial sustainability while delivering meaningful improvements in coverage.”

Multifaceted product range with a standout offering
CompCare’s diverse product range caters to a wide spectrum of healthcare needs for corporates and individuals, including those of young people needing a level of cover that has historically been financially inaccessible.

Featuring a notable zero per cent increase for 2026, CompCare’s DigiCare plan is a highly competitive entry-level option developed to increase accessibility and enable immediate digital onboarding for young people, successfully launched last year.

“At under R1 000, this star product not only makes quality healthcare more accessible but also comes with a benefit value index of 116%, significantly outperforming comparable plans offered by the country’s four largest competitors, whose indexes range from 62.24% to 70.68%. This stark contrast highlights CompCare’s competitive edge, which extends to our other offerings as well,” he notes.

South African medical schemes continue to operate in a restricted environment dominated by the rising costs associated with medical inflation, chronic disease, and ageing member profiles. Joubert says the CompCare benefit announcement underscores the scheme’s commitment to innovating to create exceptional value while safeguarding members in this challenging environment.

Competitive advantage for members
“As one of the smaller schemes in the country, we have managed to remain agile and break through long-standing barriers to entry, opening the door for young people entering the market for the first time. The tangible difference that we are realising in comparative value for healthcare rand is considerable and bears serious consideration for private healthcare consumers across the board,” says Joubert.

CompCare also demonstrated a significant edge in market competitiveness across its SelfCare and SaverCare options, designed for young professionals and families. SuperCare Plus, the scheme’s flagship executive offering, remains in line with industry levels.

Enhanced benefits set CompCare apart
The scheme’s drive to meet changing healthcare needs has resulted in an across-the-board 4% increase in benefits for members, a rare move in a market where benefit reductions often accompany premium hikes. Notable new benefits from CompCare include:

• DigiCare members gain unlimited virtual doctor consultations, easing access to primary care without added financial pressure while prioritising the wellbeing of young members.
• All members have access to unlimited professional nurse consultations, allowing members to connect with qualified nurses through a secure online chat for instant, nurse-led care round the clock. If the nurse determines that an online consultation is feasible, members can save up to 30% on doctors’ consultation fees via uConsultTM.
• Cover for depression medication has been added to most options.
• An oncology co-payment waiver now applies to all female members. In cases where three generations of family members have had proven uterine, ovarian or cervical cancer, the scheme will cover the co-payment on pre-authorised hysterectomy, as well as mastectomy and reconstructive surgery with contracted doctors.
• The hearing aid benefit now extends to children under 12 across all options.
• The co-payment for in-hospital mole removals has been lifted due to rising skin cancer rates.

Streamlining healthcare through digital innovation
Members choosing CompCare as their trusted healthcare partner will also benefit from several digital features that keep pace with their changing lifestyles and seamlessly sync with their healthcare journey.

In addition to the holistic wellness app and AI-enabled health checker implemented by the scheme last year, members will now have access to a smart records system, providing central access to a secure, digital records archive including prescribed medications, test results, consultations, and hospital records. Furthermore, an AI-powered personal health assistant will provide members with timely reminders for prescription renewals, medication refills, appointments, vaccinations, and follow-ups. This detailed tool also assists with proper medication adherence, guiding members on when and how to take their medicine - for example, in the evenings with food while avoiding alcohol.

“CompCare’s new benefit enhancements and streamlined healthcare tools provide members with an elevated medical scheme experience that puts their health on autopilot, allowing them to focus on living life while we keep health and wellness running in the background.

“This evolution highlights the role of the forward-thinking medical scheme as a valued healthcare partner rather than a traditional health insurance mechanism. This is a paradigm shift where the door to top-tier service and care is being opened, and where technology and smart cost-savings are key role-players in achieving better coverage for the South Africans of today,” concludes Joubert.
