Mental health awareness: How can your medical scheme help you?

Mental illness does not discriminate; it can affect anyone regardless of age, race, and gender. Given its rising prevalence in the country, it is unfortunately too common for people to display reluctance in talking about it with their loved ones for fear of being judged.

Many have sought to broach the topic with their medical scheme to hope that help and support can be found without incurring unbearable costs. This is becoming particularly true for our country’s youth.

Craig Comrie, CEO of Profmed says, “We have seen growing mental health issues in the age groups of 15 to 35. This is a blatant sign that mental illness is a problem that is increasingly spreading among the younger population.”

When part of a medical scheme, a stress check is necessary for all members to help identify any mental disorders. “At Profmed, we pride ourselves on enabling you to identify your stress, see if it moves into a space where you are sleeping less, where your relationships are affected, even your working environment might stress your mental outlook,” says Comrie.
