The first DVD in Medihelp’s “Living with…” series was launched on Carte Blanche yesterday evening (Sunday 16 November 2008). In this broadcast, viewers would have seen snippets of the DVD “Living with Bipolar Mood Disorder”, the first in a series of 13 DVDs focusing on psychiatric conditions.
The series was commissioned by Medihelp to educate Medihelp members and the public on various psychiatric disorders. Since limited information is available on these disorders, and visual storytelling is a powerful medium to transmit information, these DVDs will serve as a valuable educational tool. The series is produced by the well-known film maker Katinka Heyns of Sonneblom Films and her son, Simon Barnard.
The first DVD deals with bipolar mood disorder and depicts the real-life account of Simon and his family, and is underpinned by clinical interpretation by a specialist in the field.
All DVDs in the series are based on real-life accounts. The series is aimed at helping people living with certain psychiatric disorders, their families and other interested groups such as teachers, nurses and universities to gain insight into the different manifestations of the disorders and also learn how to support loved ones.
Other programmes in the series include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), major depression, sleeping and eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). All DVDs in the series will be accompanied by a guide containing more information on the particular psychiatric condition.
A number of external channels will be used to inform the public on when the first DVD as well as the rest of the DVDs in the series will be released. Please visit Medihelp’s web site for updates on how to order the DVD once it becomes available. The first DVD in the series, “Living with Bipolar Mood Disorder”, will be available early next year. The cost of the DVD will also be published on the web site. The DVD will be offered to Medihelp members at a discount tariff.
