Disciplinary hearing: Chief Executive and Registrar of the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS)

17 March 2015 | Healthcare | General | CMS

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), an autonomous statutory body created by parliament to regulate Medical Schemes in South Africa, today announced that the independent forensic investigation of Dr Monwabisi Gantsho, Chief Executive of CMS and Registrar of Medical Schemes was recently finalised. Dr Gantsho was suspended from his positions on 14 April 2014 pending an investigation into certain allegations made against him.

Flowing from the investigation report certain allegations have been put to Dr Gantsho to which he has to answer during a disciplinary hearing to which he has been called to attend. A senior counsel has been appointed to chair the hearing and to make recommendations, having regard to the allegations, on Dr Gantsho’s fitness to carry on in his role as executive officer of the CMS and as Registrar of Medical Schemes. Certain aspects of the investigation which could not be concluded during the independent forensic investigation still require further investigation.

In order to protect Dr Gantsho’s rights, and since the investigation and hearing are internal private matters, the Minister and the CMS cannot comment any further until such time as the disciplinary process has been finalised.
