Comment by CEO of Metropolitan Health, in response to CMS re false advertising and high admin fees

21 September 2012 Blum Khan, CEO of Metropolitan Health

Keeping healthcare affordable for all South Africans remains a critical imperative. We welcome the call for transparency by the Council for Medical Schemes; however, we caution them not to tarnish the industry with the same brush

The onus to keep administration costs low sits with the medical scheme in the best interests of the member, but they need to work together at administrative, provider-negotiation and managed care levels to optimise price and quality of services, and keep costs down. At Metropolitan Health, our non-healthcare costs sit at approximately 8%, well below the industry norm. The regulator has set an industry that states that non-healthcare costs should be no more than 10 percent of the member’s monthly contribution.
