AI bias: who pays the price?

09 September 2025 | Healthcare | General | Myra Knoesen

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to permeate the healthcare landscape, understanding the associated risks and developing effective mitigation strategies is critical.

FAnews recently spoke with Margot Brews, Head of Health Risk Management Strategy at Momentum Health Solutions, who shared her insights on how insurers are addressing these emerging challenges.

Addressing ethical concerns and data protection

Brews emphasises the importance of AI in creating a more efficient healthcare system but acknowledges the ethical concerns that arise, particularly around data protection, privacy, and accuracy. “AI is pivotal in creating a more efficient healthcare system, but it also raises ethical concerns, particularly around data protection, privacy, and accuracy,” she states.

To tackle these issues, organisations are implementing robust risk mitigation protocols. “These include stringent data protection measures, continuous monitoring for cyber threats, and rigorous testing of AI algorithms to ensure they meet the highest ethical standards,” Brews explains.

By prioritising these areas, the aim is to safeguard patient care and maintain trust in AI-driven healthcare solutions.

Addressing failures with tailored solutions

As AI technologies become more integrated into healthcare, the risk of performance failures looms large. Brews discusses the commitment to address these emerging risks, stating, “Organisations are committed to providing tailored healthcare solutions that go beyond generic benefits.” In South Africa, this involves addressing local healthcare challenges such as resource constraints and access disparities.

By forming partnerships with companies, healthcare providers are equipped with advanced AI tools and resources. “These partnerships enable us to offer unique, individualised care to members,” she says. By leveraging AI, diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficiency are enhanced, ensuring that members receive the best possible care.

Furthermore, there is a focus on bootstrapping supplier agreements to cover third-party risks, including errors and omissions. Brews adds, “Some healthcare providers are exploring more innovative products designed to cover AI-related risks, ensuring that members are protected against potential AI performance failures.”

Ensuring AI accuracy and fairness

With the increasing reliance on AI for patient monitoring and diagnosis, ensuring accuracy and fairness of algorithms is essential. Brews asserts, “Some healthcare providers employ comprehensive validation processes to detect and correct biases, and continuously update models to reflect the latest medical knowledge.” Given South Africa’s diverse population, there is a particular emphasis on making sure AI systems are inclusive and representative.

To further mitigate the risks of algorithmic errors, solutions are being developed specifically to address these challenges. “Healthcare providers are providing an added layer of security for both healthcare providers and patients, and they expect the same high standards from solution partners,” Brews states.

Collaborating with professionals and developers

The integration of AI technologies into patient care requires collaboration between medical professionals and AI developers. Brews highlights the importance of this collaboration, noting, “AI holds immense potential to transform healthcare, especially in regions with significant disparities such as South Africa.”

To ensure effective integration, close collaboration with medical professionals and AI developers is essential. Brews explains, “Some healthcare providers’ initiatives include thought leadership seminars for healthcare workers to enhance their AI literacy and partnerships with local practice management software vendors to foster innovation in AI applications.”

The overarching goal is to “empower healthcare workers, enhance service delivery, and ultimately bridge the gap between public and private healthcare sectors.” By harnessing AI, the aim is to drive sustainable and equitable healthcare improvements.

Cybersecurity and Risk Management Strategies

In light of the increasing threat of cyberattacks, protecting healthcare providers from AI-related security breaches is a top priority. Brews outlines a multi-layered approach to cybersecurity: “this includes advanced encryption, real-time threat detection, and regular security audits to safeguard sensitive data.”

In South Africa, where the healthcare sector faces unique cyber threats, there is a strong emphasis on vigilance. “We are particularly vigilant about the unique cyber threats faced by the healthcare sector,” she notes. Additionally, leveraging AI-driven healthcare solutions that incorporate robust security measures is vital.

“By continuously updating our security protocols and investing in cutting-edge technologies, we aim to create a secure environment for the integration of AI in healthcare,” Brews asserts. This proactive approach not only protects patient information but also ensures that healthcare management teams can deliver uninterrupted, high-quality care.

The future of AI in healthcare

Looking ahead, Brews is optimistic about the role of AI in transforming healthcare but remains aware of the challenges that lie ahead. “AI represents a significant opportunity to enhance patient care, but it must be implemented responsibly,” she emphasises.

The focus on ethical standards, accuracy, and collaboration with healthcare professionals will be key to overcoming the hurdles associated with AI technologies. As the sector continues to innovate, Brews asserts that there is a dedication to ensuring that AI serves as a tool for positive change in the healthcare landscape.

Writer’s Thoughts

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in healthcare systems, insurers and providers must remain vigilant, prioritising ethical oversight, robust cybersecurity, and inclusive algorithm design to maintain public trust.
