Retailer confidence declines as higher rates and the new credit act start to bite

Results from the latest Bureau for Economic Research (BER) Retail Survey reveal that the confidence levels of retailers declined during the third quarter of 2007. The BERs retailer confidence index dipped from a record high of 91 index points in the second quarter of 2007 to a level of 84 during the third quarter. However, with 84% of retailers indicating that they were satisfied with prevailing business conditions during the third quarter, retailers can still be regarded as very optimistic.
