Defensive and strategic deals boost M&A in insurance, Swiss Re sigma says
• M&A activity in insurance has picked up in recent months from the overall low levels seen since the financial crisis of 2008-09
• Globally, there were 489 completed deals in 2014 compared with 674 in 2007
• The recent M&A upswing is largely concentrated in certain sectors such as specialty re/insurers and insurance intermediaries
• Consolidation is a response to the squeeze on middle-tier specialist re/insurers
• Regulatory changes, alternative investors, globalisation and access to distribution technology will stimulate further M&A
