Mutual & Federal Universities Boat Race a great success

The annual Mutual & Federal Universities Boat Race, held in Port Alfred over the weekend, proved once again why it is a highlight on the universities’ sporting calendars thanks to a nail biting finish in the Men’s race. The University of Pretoria eventually took the winning spot over the University of Johannesburg, while in the Women’s event the University of Johannesburg beat the University of Pretoria.

“South African rowers are continuing to perform well at an international level, which is why Mutual & Federal is so committed to this event,” explains Caroline Da Silva, Executive: Sales of Mutual & Federal. “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the organisers, administrators and safety overseers for ensuring that the event went off smoothly and was enjoyable for all. Most importantly, we would like to thank the Port Alfred community, who show such hospitality to supporters and participants over the three days of racing.”

2011 marks the eleventh year that Mutual & Federal, a member of the Old Mutual Group, has supported this event by sponsoring the travel expenses of the nine teams from the universities of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal, Rhodes, Wits, Fort Hare and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan.

The 2011 winners of the Men’s and Women’s categories are:

Men’s A

1st Place - University of Pretoria

2nd Place - University of Johannesburg

Women’s A

1st Place - University of Johannesburg

2nd Place – University of Pretoria

Men’s B

1st Place –Rhodes University

2nd Place – University of Johannesburg

Women’s B

1st Place – University of Pretoria

2nd Place – Rhodes University
