Liberty and Rise Against Hunger pack meals on Mandela Day

18 July 2017 Liberty

Liberty staff aim to pack over 150 000 food parcels.

Today, more than 900 Liberty employees, in partnership with NPO, Rise Against Hunger team up to pledge their 67 minutes in support of Nelson Mandela Day. Employees from the insurer’s Braamfontein, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth offices take part in the initiative.

Together, Liberty’s employees aim to pack over 150 000, food parcels for underprivileged children across the country which will be distributed to Early Childhood Development Centres in need of assistance. Rise Against Hunger, an international organisation committed to stopping the scourge of hunger around the world, will distribute the packed meals to over 340 children in the various locations providing them with five meals a week, for a whole year. Last year, Liberty staff exceeded the initial target of 90 000 meals.

According to research quoted by Rise Against Hunger, food security is a major issue in South Africa and Africa at large. An estimated 3.1 million children face chronic hunger in South Africa. Some of the most affected and vulnerable groups are small children at pre-school level.

Sydney Mbhele, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer at Liberty comments: “Liberty has recognised that hunger can be a barrier to the learning process in the classroom. As an organisation we believe that education is a vehicle to addressing the country’s challenges, while eliminating poverty and reducing inequality in our society. If children are well fed, then they are able to concentrate on their studies and enjoy other developmental aspects of their lives. As Liberty celebrates its 60th anniversary, this initiative also gives us an added opportunity to further demonstrate our commitment to enriching the communities in which we operate.”

Liberty’s partnership with Rise Against Hunger is one of the group’s many initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development within local communities.

“Liberty’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) efforts are focused on education. We believe that our initiatives should contribute to building a thriving economy which is vital to our collective destiny, and will light the way to financial prosperity for generations of Africans to come,” concludes Mbhele.
