SHA Specialist Underwriters is taking its first step towards helping other African countries access effective liability cover through its Africa Broker Conference taking place on the 13th and 14th of August 2015 in Johannesburg. The two day workshop will see brokers and insurers from six African countries attending the training session in order to gain insights into the specialist field of liability cover.

Mmule Mpakanyane, Head: Africa Operations at SHA Specialist Underwriters, says that the liability insurance offering in other African countries is not as comprehensive or well-established as in South Africa. “Therefore, SHA Specialists Underwriters decided to transfer its specialist skills to the continent in order to assist brokers from these African countries to understand how liability cover works, as well as to learn about the various types of liability cover that is available.”

By training these brokers we are showing our commitment to providing solid liability cover solutions for businesses and individuals in African countries, says Mpakanyane. “Once the brokers have an opportunity to meet us face-to-face, they will be able to tap into our specialist liability skills in the future knowing they have a solid partner to assist them.”

This move is part of the broader Santam Group strategy to grow its footprint in the continent, she says. “As the number of local and international insurers on the African continent increases, it is imperative that SHA Specialist Underwriters expand on the continent as well.”

Attendees for the SHA Africa Broker Conference will be travelling from Botswana, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda. “Initially, we will be focussing on Sub-Saharan countries and then expanding to the rest of the continent, though we are already receiving business from as far as afield as Ghana and Kenya,” says Mpakanyane.

The two day workshop will cover the following types of liability cover: General Liability, Accident and Health, Professional Indemnity, Directors and Officers Liability, Kidnap and Ransom, Associated Marine, among many others. The attendees will also be introduced to the SHA Pocket Underwriter, which is an online interactive tool that assists brokers to provide their clients with the most appropriate liability cover at the click of a button, via interactive videos, risk calculators and claims examples.

“We are certain this first African Broker Conference will not only build valuable relationships but will strengthen the liability insurance offering in the African continent. We look forward to hosting many more conferences,” concludes Mpakanyane.
