Final six for The Insurance Apprentice revealed

19 November 2014 | | Myra Rego

With 116 applications received for The Insurance Apprentice, the first ever reality type series the South African insurance industry has ever seen, the panellists have chosen the final six applicants they have earmarked as the best possible candidates for The Insurance Apprentice. The six apprentices are:

  •         Aaron Mrabalala
  •         Azhar Said
  •         Matthew George
  •         Mopedi Melato
  •         Roxanne Moodley
  •         Walter Ngobene

A creative spark

Having been through the second round of the selection process, the panelists identified the best possible candidates for the programme from a pool of the top 21 applicants who participated in a fun session at Innovation Group’s offices.

The competition got stiffer in the second round of the selection process as the applicants battled it out by playing three strategic, yet thought provoking games in order to mark their spot in the final six of The Insurance Apprentice.

The applicants required greater imaginative leaps than others, yet all three games had the common goal of being enjoyable at an individual as well as a group level. The games presented interesting insights to the individual’s thought processes, competitive natures and personalities.

The ultimate learning experience

With the final six participants rounded up for The Insurance Apprentice the panellist are getting ready for the intense five day learning experience in which these six apprentices will be given the chance to showcase their skills through a variety of tasks within the market such as underwriting, broking and claims management in order to test their industry knowledge, resourcefulness and determination, that will ultimately be judged by an expert panel, which will include the industry’s very own ‘Donald Trump’.

The filming of The Insurance Industry will happen over five days in January 2015 where the six contestants will be rated according to their performance on each task. The unique video series which, will be hosted at the FNB Conference Training Centre, will enable viewers to watch and follow the journey to the crowning of The Insurance Apprentice winner.

The series will be aired early 2015 via the FAnews and The Insurance Apprentice websites, and the winner will become the first South African Insurance Apprentice who will walk away with a fantastic prize of a trip to Lloyds of London, sponsored by Lloyds of London with some pocket money from Fulcrum.

One of the six participants will also get the privilege of being sponsored a full qualification of Higher Certificate in Short-Term Insurance (NQF 5) from Milpark. All study fees and study material will be included in the prize for the winner. The winner will start with the qualification in 2015/6 for a minimum of one year.

Supporting skills development

To make this possible we have sponsors who support us whole heartedly. The Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) also supports us and has endorsed this initiative from the beginning. This industry first would not have been possible without our sponsors, and we are greatful in many ways for each of these sponsors. The official sponsors are: Alexander Forbes, AON, Aquarius Underwriting Managers (AUM), Europ Assistance, FNB Insurance, Fulcrum, Hollard, Innovation Group, Inseta, Lloyds of London, Marsh South Africa, Milpark, MUA, Mutual & Federal, Norton Rose Fulbright, PWV Insurance Brokers and Stalker Hutchison Admiral (SHA). Sponsorships vary from programme sponsors to legal, stationary, venue, social media and prize sponsors.

These companies are proud to show their commitment to The Insurance Apprentice through supporting the skills development of young industry representatives and helping them prepare for a rewarding future, and at the same time showcasing our industry to a much bigger audience.

Editor’s Thoughts:
Being a part of the second round of the selection process was fun and interesting to watch as the applicants played out their given tasks. Not only was there great interaction amongst the applicants, but their competitive streaks highlighted and reinforced the very reason why these were the chosen 21. The different personality types make me look forward to next year when we start filming The Insurance Apprentice. Until then, I cannot wait for January! I think the title is misleading - it should be called " The Short term insurance apprentice"

If the winner is going to follow a short term qualification as prize!
