LookSee, powered by Standard Bank, has announced a set of solutions to help consumers address water challenges.

This is in addition to other home efficiency innovations offered by the platform designed to help consumers make informed decisions about moving to solar power, save money on monthly costs and make the most of their home.

Whether it's restrictions, interruptions, or unforeseen watershedding, water security is becoming a significant concern for South Africans. And with climate experts predicting an increase in weather volatility, water security is going to become a greater focus.

“Given the various challenges we have seen in recent years and the challenges we anticipate in relation to water, we are focused on helping households find the best water solutions for their needs,” says Marc Du Plessis, Executive Head of LookSee.

While using water storage tanks for rainwater harvesting or municipal back up are not new to the market, LookSee has identified that households are finding choosing the right system and understanding the installation requirements for their specific properties to be a challenge.

“The water tank, itself, is a pretty standard piece of equipment, but where and how it’s installed depends very much on what you want to use it for, the conditions of your property and where you want to use the stored water. This means that a standard installation is actually quite rare, leaving households frustrated or disappointed with results of their installations,” explains du Plessis.

For this reason, LookSee has introduced a water tank consultation and assessment with an experienced water backup specialist.

“This specialist helps households identify the type of water backup solution is best for their needs. For instance, if you’re looking to lower your water bill you might want to get a pool backwash tank or a rainwater harvesting system to cover your outdoor water needs like gardening, washing cars and cleaning. On the other hand, if you’re looking to secure your access to clean drinking water during outages and interruptions, then you’ll want to consider a municipal backup tank,” du Plessis points out.

Once a decision is made about the appropriate water backup solution, the specialist will then consider the best place for the water tank to be placed and the installation requirements. Rainwater harvesting tanks typically need to be placed as close to the home’s guttering system, municipal backup tanks are placed closest to the municipal supply, and pool backwash tanks closest to the pool.

This position then determines what will be required in terms of installation costs such as whether the ground needs to be levelled, a slab poured and the necessary piping to get the water to where you want to use it.

“At the end of the consultation and assessment the customer has a full understanding on the best solution for their needs and what it would cost to get the system installed. And if they choose to go ahead with the quote, the consultation and assessment fee is returned,” says du Plessis.

According to a study commissioned by the Department of Water and Sanitation, South Africa is the 30th driest country in the world and many parts of the country are approaching a scenario where the demand outstrips the supply.

“Most recently Tshwane and Johannesburg have seen water disruptions that had adverse impacts on sects of the local population, not to mention the challenges that many of our coastal communities have experienced with water security over the past few years. It is therefore essential for households to consider alternatives to conserve and efficiently use the water that they do have,” adds Du Plessis.
