The TIA 2025 Info Session was a morning filled with inspiration, insight, and empowerment, as young professionals gathered to hear about The Insurance Apprentice and its profound impact on the industry.
Sponsored by Standard Insurance Limited and Standard Bank Insurance Brokers, the event, hosted virtually on August 20, 2024, attracted aspiring insurance professionals eager to elevate their careers and take on new challenges.
Inspiring keynote: Christopher’s journey
The session kicked off with Rianet Whitehead, FAnews Editor and Founder of The Insurance Apprentice talking about #TIA2025 and the likelihood of the series going to TV, with headline sponsor Sasria, plus the grand prize of R100 000 in cash, sponsored by Aon South Africa for the winner of #TIA2025, and more.
This followed with a powerful keynote from Christopher Appanah, the winner of The Insurance Apprentice 2023. Reflecting on his journey, Christopher shared, “The Insurance Apprentice was a transformative experience for me, both personally and professionally. It was one of the things I’ve invested in that had the biggest return on investment. It pushed me beyond my limits and opened doors I never thought possible.”
His story resonated with many in the audience, offering a glimpse into the profound impact the competition can have on one’s career. Christopher emphasised the value of stepping outside one’s comfort zone, stating, “The competition is tough, but it’s an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to prove to yourself and others what you’re capable of. If you are considering entering… just do it; you won’t regret it. The three themes that were relevant to me will be relevant to you: 1) Comfort - get out of your comfort zone, 2) Growth - grow and develop, and 3) Connect - connect with colleagues and competitors so you have support.”
Panel discussion: the ripple effect of TIA
Following the keynote, the event featured an insightful panel discussion moderated by Temwa Nyirenda, the winner of TIA 2024. Temwa was joined by Alicia Narainsamy, a contestant from Season 2, and industry titan, Muzi Dladla, Executive Manager of Stakeholder Management at Sasria SOC Ltd.
Alicia spoke passionately about her experience with The Insurance Apprentice and its lasting impact on her career. “As an ambassador for TIA, people often ask me why I stayed with the competition, and I say it’s bigger than me. It’s about impacting the lives of others and future generations for the benefit it yields and the impact it has in creating future leaders.”
“My journey started in season 2. Fear aside, I put myself out there and ended up in the top 2. Growth is there, and the capacity to grow is there… you just have to be willing to put in the work. TIA was a game-changer for me and allowed me to excel in my career. This is your platform. Take the chance and go for it… apply,” she said.
Muzi provided a broader industry perspective, discussing the competition’s influence on the insurance sector. “The Insurance Apprentice is more than just a competition; it challenges participants to think critically, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to the industry. The skills honed through TIA are invaluable, and the connections made are lifelong. For me, it’s also about industry growth and innovation. The insurance sector is generally much bigger than people think. We need to spread the word, and participating in something like this highlights aspects that people might not necessarily see or opportunities for those who do not get the chance to showcase our industry. Customer education is also a significant aspect for me. The education component of the show is crucial. Lastly, the talent pipeline is important to me. There’s no single person who hasn’t progressed from this show. These three reasons - industry growth, customer education, and talent development - are why we should invest in something like The Insurance Apprentice. Entities should encourage employees to enter, it's good for them and the industry.”
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where the panellists answered burning questions. The questions ranged from advice on the application process to insights on how to stand out in the competition and what to expect. The panellists were eager to share their wisdom, with Temwa encouraging participants to “be authentic and let your passion for the industry shine through.”

This platform is designed for past TIA finalists and members, allowing us to share valuable content and spotlight the alumni members. We aim to create meaningful opportunities for growth and networking, while also fostering a culture of giving. We will be there for contestants going through their journeys, ready to embrace them and take them on the growth journey with them.”
