It’s like a date… but a bit more serious

15 July 2022 Myra Knoesen

This week, we do away with our cosy studio setup and our top four contestants join us LIVE, at 1 Discovery Place, for a special season finale episode, where only one task stands between our contestants and their hopes of becoming The Insurance Apprentice.

Risks facing businesses

Fire is one of the major risks facing businesses. It can lead to significant losses and even business failure. In addition to the physical risks, businesses operating in the 21st century face new types of risks due to changes in the business landscape. Some of the macro trends affecting businesses today are advances in technology, increased use of social media as well as social and political influences. These changes have caused the source of value for businesses to shift from largely tangible assets to largely intangible assets.

To survive, the business owner needs to know what’s going on in all areas of the business, as well as how to improve and grow in those areas. A diagnostic tool can help businesses assess their health in areas such as operations, human capital and sales. It can also help them develop strategies to improve in identified business development areas.

It is also important for businesses to understand their risks and how to improve these. With technology comes advanced methods that insurers can use to assess risk at the business premises, like using drones to assess areas that would be difficult to reach otherwise.

Comprehensive value propositions

In task nine, episode nine, sponsored by Discovery Insure, the contestants get an opportunity to experience “The Discovery Date”. Each contestant got to spend the day with one of the Discovery tenants to learn more about these businesses operating within the Discovery building.

Having picked their business of choice, the contestants spend the day with their selected business to understand the operations of the business and identify the risks the business faces. They identify the physical and non-physical risks, as well as any unforeseen risks the business should look out for, to come up with a value proposition that would provide comprehensive cover for the business, keeping in mind the newly emerging risks businesses face.

Judge Simon Colman and Nox Dlamini, Managing Director at XonRisk and guest judge Lisa Setzkorn, Business Development Manager at Discovery Insure were looking for comprehensive thinking from the contestants.

For some of the contestants, this was not a good day at the office…
