Breaking through the glass ceiling
It has been weeks filled with challenging and exciting tasks, as the apprentices rally through their second last task for The Insurance Apprentice 2018. The insurance industry has traditionally been white and male dominated, but a few strong ambitious women have been breaking through the glass ceiling over the last few years. With Inseta as the episode sponsor, the apprentices knew their task would probably be a visit to school to talk to learners about a career in the insurance industry. The apprentices had to talk to the students about women in insurance who have been breaking through the glass ceiling.
The task at hand
The venue was Jeppe High School for Girls, an all-girls high school. Jeppe High School for Girls, ranked as the Top School in Gauteng by Beeld on 29 January 2010, regularly acknowledged by Wits University as a Top Feeder School and in 2013, named an Allan Gray Circle of Excellence School boasts well-rounded, enquiring young women who think critically and engage constructively with others. Well known to the insurance industry, Christine Rodrigues, Partner at Hogan Lovells, was instrumental in bringing the school to our attention as she herself is a product of Jeppe High School.
The task for the day, sponsored by Inseta, saw the apprentices conduct research, days before their presentations, of the career of a female leader in insurance, locally or globally, and present this person’s rise and journey to the audience.
They had to talk about their educational journey and conclude with motivation for the learners with a brief overview of what Inseta is/does and the opportunities that Inseta provides that could offer a similar career trajectory for the learners.

The prize
The winner of The Insurance Apprentice 2018 will fly to London, in business class, for a week to visit Lloyds of London, sponsored Lloyds of London; the winner will also receive a bursary valued at R75 000 from INSETA and win a cash prize of R20 000 from Masifunde Training Centre. The Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) is also sponsoring the winner to go to the Insurance Conference at Sun City in July 2018.
